Description
The house stands on the lower Zürichberg hill on level
with the university, set on one of the inconspicuous neighbourhood streets
named after flowers. The simple plastered residential houses in the neighbourhood
are painted in various colours, with modest façade ornament; some have oriels
or small balconies and strong rooflines with mansard and attached hipped roof. The
house on Narzissenstrasse fits into this familiar context. Bay windows dominate
the narrow street façade, balconies with pergolas occupy the corners, and the
roof here also forms a mansard. The coloured plaster surfaces and white windows
are framed by profiled concrete elements. A narrow front garden separates the
house from the street. The building accommodates two apartments on each floor,
one facing the street and the other facing the garden. The connecting element
is an elongated living area, which in one case runs along the street and in the
other protrudes into the garden. As on the exterior, the interior expression is
determined not by abstraction but by the concrete.
