Description
The «Stadthaus» in
Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth is a historic residential building constructed around
1880. As it lies in a conservation area, it was completely renovated in 2018/19
and the historic façades were faithfully restored in consultation with the
listed buildings authority. The
framework of the house has largely been preserved. The centrally located
entrance area and the staircase that is aligned with it divide the layout into
two building segments of equal size. On the ground floor are the kitchen and
dining area while the first floor is entirely devoted to living space. The
parents’ and childrens’ bedrooms are on the two floors above. The «Stadthaus» is
characterised by the dialogue between the historic building structure and a
desire for contemporary, open plan living. The clean stylistic idiom is a recurring
theme throughout the house. Homage to the historic building is not paid by
copying bygone architecture. Instead, the building was resolutely freed of
superfluous embellishments in order to accentuate the quintessential,
characteristic features of the house.
