Description

More than anywhere else, major public functions set vertical accents in the Basel urban region. The new building of the FHNW with its cubic structure is part of this network. It is preceded by a representative esplanade and a park, serving as welcoming space for the incoming visitors as well as recreation zone for the students and staff of the faculties and for the municipality. With a height of more than 60 metres, the new building of the University of Applied Sciences is de facto a high-rise, although its building type is that of a courtyard house. The reception hall and the auditorium, the refectory and the cafeteria as well as the lecture halls and seminar rooms for all faculties are arranged around the atrium at the entrance level. The open library floor, designed as a piano nobile, is accessible via six staircases that cross the atrium over three floors in all directions and impresses with its width and transparency.A load-bearing box structure similar to that used for bridge construction spans the library floor and allows for two atria to rise up another nine storeys. The twelfth floor accommodates a lounge with a magnificent panorama view leading out to a hidden roof garden.
