Description

The three-storey apartment block with a penthouse level is located in a rear courtyard in the Ottensen area of Hamburg. The key challenges for the new building were the narrow plot geometry and the adjacent, dense building development. The plot is accessed via a courtyard entrance. This is where 23 apartments and an underground car park with 44 parking spaces will be developed. A third of the apartments consist of social housing. The ground floor apartments provide barrier free access. The plot is bounded by a four-storey fire wall to the south. The objective was to establish a building typology that would create optimal light conditions for the apartments despite their northerly aspect. This was achieved via three atria within the apartment block. Two apartments are arranged around each of these atria in a U-shape. The cubic volume of the new building furthermore reacts to the selective development of neighbouring plots to the north. The apartments can therefore be illuminated from four sides. The living and dining areas face the courtyard and have floor to ceiling glazing that opens onto generous balconies. The bedrooms face north and are shielded from view. Three stairwells as well as service rooms (bathrooms, toilets, utility rooms) will be positioned along the adjacent property to the south. The penthouse level provides additional outside space in the form of roof terraces. The bright, light-reflecting rendered façade is structured with window and panel sections made of thermally treated beechwood.
