Description
The
props and workshops necessary for the operation of the Hamburg State Opera,
which were previously spread over three locations, will be brought together by
a new building on the site of the so-called piggyback railway station in
Hamburg's Rothenburgsort district. The task of the competition was to optimise
and implement the existing functional concept for merging the various areas in
the urban context. The design shows a clear, self-confident architectural
language that is characterised by a reduced choice of colour, form and
structure. The elaboration of specific and formative design elements creates
plasticity and shadows. As an abstract interpretation of a stage curtain, a
differentiated metal façade with folded edges creates references to the State
Opera. The different areas of use – decoration workshops, backdrop collections
and costume and mask collections – are each given their
own structural identity through fine differentiation in colour and structure.
At the same time, the basic design concept creates a homogeneous urban unit
with a common address. The compact and dense construction allows an optimal use
of space. Refinements in proportion and design give the ensemble the desired
creative power and a high recognition value.
