Description

The Adolphe bridge links two major areas of the City of Luxembourg, the upper town and the station area. The bridge, in service since 1903, needed important renovation works. The bridge deck was enlarged by 1.50 m to achieve a total width of 18.70 m, thus making it possible to add two tracks for the tram which will circulate in 2022. Furthermore, in order to expand the cycling network, the solution of a footbridge suspended between the two arches under the Adolphe Bridge was selected. The project consists of a light metal structure fixed to the reinforced concrete slab with hangers. The footbridge is suspended in the air over a length of 154 m under the new deck of the Adolphe Bridge and between bridge abutments on either side. The footbridge, like a well-controlled spider’s web that is barely visible from the outside, provides a contemporary freshness. This new section integrates respectfully with the historical bridge and produces a harmonious and homogeneous image.
