Description
The new primary school building in Kappel completes the sequence of public buildings along Schulhausstrasse. It gives the school ensemble a distinctive new look, while carrying on the motif of projecting roofs to blend effortlessly with the pre-existing structure. The striking façade contrasts markedly with that of the former school building from 1964. The new pavilion construction thus stands out as an independent schoolhouse, lending the entire complex a new and more contemporary presence. Sheltered terraces are set atop a base, each accommodating two classrooms and the corresponding group room. At the centre of the building is a large rotunda illuminated by encircling clerestory windows. This central hall affords access to the classrooms and also serves as a weather-protected break area. It can also be used as a community hall and gives the school complex a completely new and unique identity in the community.
