“Dialogue of place and human”
The Salgenreute chapel unites the historical and traditional aspects that characterise many places in the Bregenzerwald. The chapel is built out of wood and stone. The sunlight will gradually darken the wooden façade to black in the south and silver-grey in the north, just like the old farmhouses in the area. The simple shape is based on the existing 200-year-old-chapel and comprises a nave and an apse.
»It is about relationships with the concrete place and its people, from which the architecture refers its characteristics«
The shape of the room is new – a steeply rising spatial folding made out of wood. The inside of the chapel is dominated by the homogeneous material of the wall and ceiling. The light that shines through the frontal window creates a special atmosphere. A Madonna statue from the original building is arranged differently from classical concepts, at the side of the apse. The view straight ahead through the white apse leads directly to the natural setting outdoors. Anyone entering the chapel leaves solid ground and embarks on a reflective journey.
»The regional bond between architecture and the characteristic relationship between the interior spaces and the qualities of the immediate environment characterize his work - every project is a entity of nature and culture. Elaborate and at the same time clear, all details are worked through and perfectly executed by hand.«
