Description

A black cube nestles at the foot of Hackenberg hill in Sievering, Austria. The rough-sawn fir façade was impregnated with a special surface glaze at the client’s request, its noble black shade harmonising perfectly with the tall trees around the house. On a narrow plot of 50 square metres, living space has been created here for a family of five.

There was no room for exalted flights of fancy – the inhabitants dwell in streamlined silver fir surroundings. Flush-fitted built-in cabinets hold all the accoutrements of everyday life, with solid wood doors reaching up to the ceiling. The high-grade interior design, accurate down to the last millimetre and with precision details, wrests the maximum amount of living space from the limited floor area. The floors are made of rough-sawn untreated silver fir planks that are warm and silky to the touch.

A bright staircase as central element links the upper floor with the fully developed basement level. Wherever concrete had to be used, the material is left visible. The parents’ desire for their children to see trees and the sky from inside the house is accommodated on the upper floor. Cosily ensconced in simple silver fir furniture, they can gaze through the large picture window onto the trees at the edge of the plot and the lights of Vienna.
