Description

The plot is located on the northern edge of a former company site. The conversion of this area on the outskirts of Stuttgart for residential use offered the clients, a young family, the chance to build their own home. They thus traded their rented flat in Stuttgart’s valley basin with public transport connections for a single-family house with electric car. Two major parameters determined the design process: the restrictive land-use plan and the available budget for construction costs of net 300,000 EUR. The building volume was consistently designed in accordance with the narrowly defined specifications of the development plan. The house is divided into two main zones: the functional spaces and the access area with staircase face the northern boundary of the property while all bedrooms and common rooms are facing south. The two-storey-high staircase reaching from the first to the second floor forms the light-flooded heart of the private rooms. It provides access to the bathroom, master bedroom and children’s rooms as well as to living areas and offices on the second floor. A westward-facing terrace extends the living area to the outdoors. From the outside, the dark corrugated metal façade underlines the building’s solidity while the industrial material recalls the former factory grounds. The house’s energy consumption has been optimised through a controlled ventilation and heat recovery system as well as a photovoltaic unit installed on the roof. Aside from supplying the residence, this unit provides sufficient electricity for the electric car to commute to the city centre.
