Description

The house was built atop the foundations of a demolished structure that had served as a utility building for a typical regional farm. The design challenge thus consisted in fitting the residence inside the limits dictated by the volume of the previous building and also dealing with the situation of the plot, which excluded the possibility of a southern orientation. The end result is a house for four, with a half-basement below, a kitchen, dining room and living room on the ground floor, and bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. The living room gets both morning and evening sun. Open to the kitchen, it has access to the garden from both sides and features changes in floor level. The kitchen and dining area are thus high and open as the focal point of the space, while the living room ceiling is pulled down somewhat to create a cosy retreat. With its sparsely set windows and simple board and batten exterior cladding, the house is designed to fit unobtrusively in the hamlet. From the living room window, a small shed can be seen, similarly clad in wood boards, now weathered, as well as a fruit tree in the middle of a meadow – the simple views enjoyed in country living.
