Description
The brief for the extension of the school in Unterföhring primarily involved inserting the required volume into the intact, small-scale urban environment. Setting a compact, elongated structure on the far western edge of the property creates an angular ensemble with the existing school buildings. All buildings are entered from the central schoolyard, which in turn can only be accessed from Schulstrasse. With only one new building added to the complex, the schoolyard can continue to be experienced as a large contiguous area. On the Münchener Strasse side, the new building does not reveal its presence but instead stands »in the second row«. The area opened up by the demolition of the old hall is deliberately not occupied by the large schoolhouse but instead reconceived as an attractive neighbourhood square.
