Description
The first German institute for age research is also breaking new ground spatially with its new building: the laboratories were combined into a flowing space so that wet areas and offices are in direct visual contact, and the research groups are separated only by shared core zones where the installations are concentrated. Light-filled research areas and transparent circulation routes promote academic exchange and a modern, interactive way of working. The polygonal building follows the course of the street and forms a public passageway on the entrance level. Its staggered form responds sensitively to the residential area to the south, while conforming on the north side with the much larger scale of the other institute buildings. The multi-layered façade underscores the building’s urban cubature as well as its inner organisational principle, clad in a suspended glass fibre membrane that saves energy and enables the glare-free dispersion of daylight deep into all floors while at the same time affording the users unobstructed views outside.
