Description
Set in the middle of an agricultural zone, the plot overlooks Lake Lucerne. The newly built residence, together with the barn, forms the core of a typical »farmyard« ensemble. The barn was renovated and modernised with minimal interventions. In the expansive interior of the former farm building prefabricated »containers« are stacked up that hold a collection of »Schwyzerörgel« – Swiss accordions. The façade of the residence was constructed using the local timber frame method. The pattern generated by the cross-timbers has a fascinating graphic quality; this distinctive feature of the vernacular rural building tradition is overlaid here with a more abstract, contemporary aesthetic. The evident kinship between the new architecture and the neighbouring farm buildings all around, further reinforced by the gabled roof, ensures harmonious integration into the landscape. The aim was to develop a formal language inspired by the traditional architecture but instantly recognisable as contemporary and anything but conservative or romanticising.
