Description
The new house is located on a prominent site in the village centre of Küsnacht, replacing a former barn, which called for a sensitive insertion into the existing context. On the street side, the building mimics the look of the former barn, but at the rear it frees itself from this model to develop as a staggered volume into the depth of the property. In cross-section, the theme of the pitched roof is taken up and refined into a striking double-gabled roof that lends the building a distinctive character and fuses the overall volume into a cohesive unit. With its minimal roof overhang and reduced formal vocabulary, the house clearly asserts itself as a contemporary structure, whilst the roof of plain clay tiles echoes the roofs of the surrounding buildings. The façade uses materials and an articulation that pay tribute to the old barn. The residential floors with their glazed-timber cladding and continuous vertical slats rest on a base of painted concrete.
