Description
Anyone ascending the 70-metre-long and 10-metre-wide Sky Ladder will experience an exciting change of perspective and unique framed views over the »Tirschenreuther Teichpfanne« wetlands. This cultural landscape, created by the Cistercian monks in the 12th century, boasts 4,000 ponds and a number of species of flora and fauna that have survived hardly anywhere else. An essential design element for the landmark is its connection on two sides to a bicycle path that guides visitors through the nature reserve along a former railway line. The construction using slender steel supports lends maximum transparency within the natural surroundings, and the archaic staircase form promises an unparalleled vista. The two opposite stairways result in a slim gate that evokes the exceptional situation visitors find themselves in when entering this extraordinary landscape. The focal point is the pure unadorned structure of 80 tonnes of galvanised steel and oak – materials recalling the railway line.
