Description
The overall goal of the design is to subtly insert the new Children’s House into the fragmented structure of the municipality of Alzey and into the irregular topography of the setting, which can be experienced on both outside and in. In keeping with the project’s content and importance, the architecture is based mainly on functional requirements. Inside the building, group rooms made of wood and glass are staggered from the entrance on Gustav Stresemann Strasse downhill, interwoven via wooden terraces and large windows with the playground and the landscape. This staggering is evident in the zoned floor plan and the design of the outdoor spaces as well as in the texture of the wooden façades. The articulated building form enters into a dialogue with its environment, with the cascading access ramp becoming a play area for use as a Bobbycar® racetrack. Three individually designed, glazed interior courtyards guide the way through the building. The outdoor spaces, perfect for play, shed light into the interior and bring the seasons indoors.
