Aviel Avdar, Berlin
Between Osaka and Cádiz, Yazd and Santorini, Old Berlin and New Berlin – between what is lost and what is past, individual and social, unknown and hoped-for, present and future, between finely articulated and block-like, simple and complex, abstract and concrete, open and closed, inside and outside, between room and structure, open space and volume, light and shadow – this house has emerged, a complex fabric of spaces that sees itself as a labyrinth of light, as a fresh wind, which embraces and enriches this location, bringing something new to it and making drawbacks work to its advantage, a house that is atypical and yet belongs. Here in Berlin Mitte, on Waisenstrasse opposite the old city wall, where isolated medieval structures can still be found, we have erected this building ensemble encompassing apartments, townhouses and underground parking.
