Description

A pavilion in the garden of a villa, surrounded by dense trees, fully glazed. In order to leave a small footprint, it is two-storied and mushroom-shaped. On the ground floor is an eat-in kitchen; folding sliding glass doors open up the whole ground floor to the garden, erasing the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The upper floor is a fully glazed, open living space, zoned through various spatial depths, with views into the treetops; the pavilion becomes a tree house. Sliding windows at all five corners open up to become elevated loggias. Blinds and curtains let the residents control views and privacy. The pavilion is made entirely of in-situ concrete. The roof is supported only by the one wall and is an asymmetrical, domed folded structure of in-situ concrete cantilevered on all sides, allowing the upper floor to be free of interior supports. The pavilion can be opened up at will, offering an open, informal and unusual living space in dialogue with its surroundings, the weather and the seasons.
