Description

Elongated like a log, the new building is located on the edge of the village, a clear position that creates a public space of arrival as one approaches. Toward the forest and the countryside, a vast area opens up – largely untouched – that can be used by the residents in part as private outdoor space. A »threshing floor« – an agricultural passageway in the typical Bregenz Forest farmhouse – separates and connects these two areas. On the interior, hand-finished dark concrete surfaces alternate with vibrant local elm wood, while all outer surfaces are clad in light-coloured fir. The builders took their time, selecting the wood from their own forest in Schwarzenberg and then felling, sawing and installing it themselves. A total of 70 spruce and fir trees were employed in such a way that all parts, and not only the best pieces, could be used. An extremely systematic method of wood construction bound up with the tradition of the Bregenz Forest house.
