Description

Perched atop a ridge on the outskirts of the historic city centre, the house splits into two volumes, opening up to the valley of the South Tyrolean town of Castelrotto. These twin elements are joined together at the hip and are wedged between the house where the client grew up and a neighbouring traditional house. A concrete base negotiates the sloping site, while the larger of the two volumes contains the double-height, north-facing studio space ideal for large-scale artistic production. With the exception of the concrete core containing the stairs, the building above ground is an all-wood construction that combines a light frame system with a CLT system. The V-shaped timber structure lifts the two wooden volumes at the ground level to allow a continuity of the view across the site and playfully echoes local, rural construction techniques.
