In direct proximity to residential buildings, a home for the elderly, a university of applied sciences, a kindergarten and a church, the school ensemble formulates a new urban feature for the north-western part of Karlsruhe. The result of a competition (multiple contract), the two-storey primary school was developed based on Montessori principles. Characteristic of this teaching approach is the so-called »learning building«, which here takes the form of spacious open-usage areas outside the classrooms. The school and gym are designed as clean-lined, right-angled volumes whose special look comes from storey-high coloured aluminium profiles. Set in a free-flowing rhythm, these fins create a play of red and green tones across the façades that constantly changes with the viewing angle.
