Description
The villa is designed as the kind of solitary structure typical for the region, perched on a hill next to a large weather tree, a familiar sight in the Appenzell region. The unusual underground entrance reinforces this image and allows nature to flow around the isolated volume undisturbed. The impression of a single-storey structure is underscored by the flowing sequences of spaces. The structural engineering concept, with the concrete supports set outside, at the periphery of the building, in conjunction with the prestressed roof, enables the realisation of an independent glass pavilion set back between the ceiling and base slabs. Its recessed position results in a surrounding zone with two large terraces arranged at the front end. The peripheral support structure defines the building, whose sculptural quality arises from the shell alone.
