Hauptverwaltung des Süddeutschen Verlages

Standing at an important entrance to the city centre like a polished crystal, the Süddeutscher Verlag Building defines the space with its well proportioned terraced atrium, which connects the tower and a side wing. A prismatic glass shell sheaths the building. The façade’s facets reflect the cityscape and sky; the huge volume appears weightless. Framed by a park and green terraces, the publishing house head office is on a sunny square, across from its own printing plant. The bottom two floors house the canteen, conference and lounge areas, an art space and a kindergarten. Above that are offices, communications areas and newsrooms for 2,000 staff. At the pinnacle is a two-storey hall, a reception area for guests. The “green build-ing” has a double façade, decentralised façade ventilation, geothermal energy and seasonal heat storage, for primary energy savings of approx. 80%. It is a candidate for the LEED Golden Certificate.
